Vitamin B12 is highly important for us if we want to stay healthy. It is also known as Cobalmin and its main importance stands in helping the conversion of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, obtaining energy. Also, it is crucial in keeping our red blood cells healthy. This directly helps us prevent heart disease and help in keeping our immune system working properly. We should also add that B12 will be used in order to create protective cover of nerve cells.
As you can easily imagine, the most important faction is the helping hand given in formation of red blood cells. On the other hand, you need to be aware that all the cells in our body needs B12. When we do not have enough vitamin B12 in our system we will end up being faced with nerve damage and red blood cells that are not healthy enough.
The good news is that our body does not need much B12. The problem is that we do need those small quantities regularly. Also, vitamin B12 is not enough because it is quite hard to be absorbed. If we strictly talk about the vitamin we have to understand that we will find it only in different animal foods like eggs, fish, meat and liver. Also, most people will take in much more B12 than actually needed. It is safe to say that this is not at all a problem and the human body can also recycle B12 in case this is needed. The problem is that most vegetarians do not take in enough of this vitamin and they usually need vitamin supplements to maintain a healthy diet.
If the body is faced with vitamin B12 deficiency the most common symptom noticed is anaemia. The reason for this is that we do not have enough B12 to create proper red blood cells. Also, as we age we will be faced with less production of intrinsic factor, which is responsible for helping in absorption of B12. There is also a higher risk of anaemia in kids when they do not eat foods that are rich in this vitamin. Also, keep in mind that pregnant women require more because the baby will also absorb B12 in order to grow.
